How to write a resume?

When thinking about how to write a resume, it is important to remember the audience. The resume is your first impression to a potential employer. Most times, it will go through a software to screen for keywords pertinent to the job description and likely also be seen by a recruiter or human resources professional. So what does this mean? You have several audiences:

1. The computer program screening your application
2. The HR professional looking at your resume
3. The hiring manager/future boss who will ultimately pick a candidate

To stand out, you have to keep ALL of this in mind and remember that the resume is one of the most important documents you will ever put together. No pressure, right?

In your resume, you need to create an image of your past professional history that is most pertinent to the job you are seeking to get. That means that not all your professional work history is relevant, nor are all of the job requirements you have now or in the past.

Finally, remember that your resume needs to be meticulously correct, structured for ease of read, and of the appropriate length.

How long should a resume be?

Your resume should be 2-3 pages long. If you have more than 15 years of experience or if you are applying for a leadership role high in an organization, 3-4 pages is more appropriate. For students, appropriate length is 1-2 pages. The shorter and more succinct you can be while preserving the important details of deliverables (e.g. improved profit by 20% over 2Q), the better you will help the hiring manager and HR specialist get an understanding of what they can expect from you as a part of the team.

What is the best resume font?

A summary section with key qualifications is essential at the top of the resume. This should be followed by your professional experience and activities section. If you have had breaks in employment or mitigating circumstances that need explaining, our career coach can help you explain and present these situations in the best light possible.

What is a CV?

CV stands for Curriculum Vitae, which is Latin for "Course of life." For the most part, unless you are applying for a research or academic career, a CV will not be pertinent to you. CV's tend to be used for medical students applying to residency or fellowship, jobs as professors, or positions that require publications or a robust speaking and writing history. If this is not you, then don't worry about writing a CV.

How to write a top resume?

The making of a resume is one of the hardest processes you can undertake. Leave any person in a room for a few hours and they can explain any part of their history and prove to an HR leader why they are the right person for the job. But you don't have that luxury. To get selected for an interview you need to make an impression to the HR leader within the first 30 seconds they look at your resume and it needs to be an enduring one.

Doing this is not easy, but with the right coaching and your own grit and motivation, it can be done. Contact us if we can help on your job search or resume preparation.
